Inspired by Science: Jaida Morgan ES’23
Drawn to the research opportunities at Yale, Jaida has worked in two research labs and found a community of peers and mentors through the STARS program. Yale University has announced a historic goal of raising $1.2 billion for students in an ambitious effort to make a Yale education more affordable and accessible. The fundraising initiative, focused on new giving for scholarships and fellowships, is included within Yale’s $7 billion For Humanity campaign, which continues until June 2026.
Dreams of Studying Epidemiology: Jayson Wright DC’2, 27 MPH
During the summer between his sophomore and junior years, Wright knew he needed research experience but wasn’t sure he could find a paid position. So, when he found a lab where he wanted to work, “I was prepared to work for free,” he says. Ultimately, the researcher did find some funding to pay him, but the choice between paid work and work that benefits one’s career can be a balancing act. Programs like STARS can relieve students from having to make that difficult choice.
Preparing for a Career in Research in Medicine: Carla Becerra SM’26
For Becerra, science is no longer an abstract dream, but a daily practice, and she says that transformation wouldn’t have been possible without the support, structure, and mentorship she found in STARS. “The skills I’ve gained through STARS, like asking questions, designing experiments, and dealing with setbacks, are things I’ll carry with me whether I’m in a lab or working with patients,” she says.
